Salcomp History and Key Milestones
Salcomp Oyj, a prominent Finnish electronics enterprise, is recognized as the world’s largest manufacturer of mobile phone chargers. While headquartered in Salo, Finland, the company’s manufacturing operations are strategically distributed across China, Brazil, India, the United States, and Turkey. Additionally, Salcomp maintains product development and sales offices in key global markets, including China, Brazil, the United States, Taiwan, Singapore, and South Korea. In the fiscal year 2023, Salcomp reported revenues of approximately €1.25 billion and employed a workforce of about 25,000 individuals. The company is wholly owned by Lingyi iTech, a leading Chinese component manufacturer.
Salcomp traces its origins to a television component factory established in Uusikaupunki, Finland, in 1973 under the name Salcomp Oy. Initially a subsidiary of Salora, the company’s core operations began in 1975 with the establishment of a television tuner factory in Kemijärvi, supported by regional government subsidies. Salcomp entered the power supply market in 1982, and following Nokia’s acquisition of Salora, the focus on power supply manufacturing intensified. By 1995, Salcomp had transitioned to specializing exclusively in charger production. Nokia retained ownership of Salcomp from 1983 until 1999.
As a pioneer in switched-mode power supplies, Salcomp was instrumental in advancing mobile phone charger technology. However, as mobile devices became more energy-efficient, the market shifted toward more cost-effective iron-core transformer chargers, prompting Salcomp to adapt to evolving industry demands.
In 2004, Salcomp ceased operations at its Kemijärvi facility, relocating production to China to remain competitive. Subsequently, in March 2006, Salcomp was listed on the Helsinki Stock Exchange, and its corporate headquarters were moved to Salo. By 2011, the Swedish investment firm Nordstjernan had acquired over 90% ownership in Salcomp and initiated its delisting from the Helsinki Stock Exchange.
In June 2019, Salcomp was acquired by Lingyi iTech, marking the beginning of a new phase of growth. Since then, the company has diversified its portfolio, expanding into advanced power solutions, photovoltaic systems, IoT integration, and energy storage technologies, cementing its position as a key player in the global electronics manufacturing industry.
