Case: Hand in Hand project

As part of the company’s external activities, Salcomp is still actively involved in the Hand in Hand project in India. In 2008, Salcomp and our biggest shareholder, the Swedish company Nordstjernan, together joined the Public Charitable Trust ‘Hand in Hand’, a corporate social responsibility project in India in the Tamil Nadu state, where Salcomp’s Indian plant is located.

Hand in Hand commenced its operation in 1988 in the Kancheepuram District. The organization has an unblemished record in integrated community development activities. Hand in Hand has an initial focus on child labor elimination, education, and the empowerment of women.

2008

Official inauguration of the project in April. Salcomp and Nordstjernan committed to make an equal contribution to support selected initiatives to be executed over a period of 2 years.
The project aims to provide vocational training, renovation & construction of Primary Health Centers (PHCs), and providing sanitation equipment and health services to selected villages.
Vocational training started in a phased manner through the cooperation project, enabling employment or self-employment.
In addition, environmental technologies, sanitation equipment and health services were provided to cooperation villages.
Kolathur village, located within a distance of around 7 kilometers from the Salcomp Sriperumbudur facility, was converted into a 100% green village.

2009

Focus on training, as well as collaborating with the cooperation villages on sanitation and renovating primary health centers.
Vocational training was provided to more than 1,300 people during 2008-2009 through the cooperation project, enabling employment or self-employment. For many people in the villages this has succeeded very well: they earn their living as mobile phone repairers, maintenance men and beauticians, for example.
Primary Health Center (PHC) Construction: Whilst PHCs are operated by the government, many basic needs are not met, leading to excessive fatality rates. Our projects are planned in close cooperation with state and local authorities to provide post-operative wards, toilets, equipment and furniture.
These PHCs serve a population of 290,000 and “our” extensions are used by 300 patients per day.
The newly constructed Post-Operative Ward building at Maduramangalam Primary Health Center was inaugurated in November 2009, and handed over to the Deputy Director of Health Services (DDHS). The PHC’s Post-Operative Ward is being fully utilized by the Hospital for serving the public.
The ground-breaking ceremony (Bhoomi Pooja) for the Kundrathur PHC took place in December 2009.
Kannanthangal, a village with 600 residents, developed from a backward village to an exemplary, clean and healthy village.

2010

Water Purification equipment with Carbon & Sand filter, UV, Reverse Osmosis system with Electrification was installed in February 2010, in the newly constructed housing facility for the equipment, in Kannanthangal village.

Vocational training was given to some 400 young people.
Some 150 Salcomp employees have received vocational training in cell phone servicing and beautician courses.

2012

Pediatric Camps were conducted in three villages – 415 children attended.
Community awareness training was given to 1,600 participants.
Vocational Skills Training to Youth; some 200 people attended.
Primary Health Care Infrastructure Program, including Patient Waiting Room in Punnai and PHC in Nemili block, Vellore District and Pregnant Mothers Consultation Room in Walajabad PHC.
